sentiment analysis

Tutorial 2 at ICON 2009, to be held Monday, 14 December 2009, at IIIT Hyderabad, is proposed by Prof Pushpak Bhattacharyya, Balamurali A R and Aditya Joshi, IIT Bombay. The duration is half a day, 1400–1730 hours.

Abstract

Sentiment analysis(SA) is broad forte of Natural language processing which deals with the computational treatment of opinion, sentiment and subjectivity in text. Due to increased availability of online reviews, there is a growing need to organise them. Sentiment analysis is one present day solution for this issue. There are different sub tasks under SA which hot field of research: subjectivity classification, word sentiment classification, sentence sentiment classification, document sentiment classification and opinion extraction. The task of classification is difficult compared to topic classification because of the pragmatics involved in the language processing. In this tutorial, we focus on related issues and main approaches to them, (mainly) in product review domain. We would be covering different techniques used for sentiment detection at different level of discourse and along with comparison of techniques using the evaluative metrics used in this field. Towards the end of the tutorial, we would be exploring unchartered and untamed territories of SA for future research.
