Scope
The last decade witnessed an enormous growth of the knowledge economy and the birth of many new economy companies - small and big. These companies added value by engineering the cutting edge research done at universities in addition to focusing on their own research. However, in the NLP area, there is still a huge gap between the commercially available products and services, and research demonstrations and theoretical contributions. We are experiencing the commercialization of research conducted in specific areas such as information retrieval and statistical machine translation, speech syntheses, but there are many areas in NLP where research systems are much more advanced and practically unavailable in commercial markets. This panel discussion is expected to bring out the opportunities as well as challenges in commercializing the research in NLP.
